About This Course

The entire health-care system requires improvements in the delivery of brief interventions in primary health care.

In line with the WHO Health System Framework, this course promotes a systems approach to improving the integrated delivery of brief interventions to reduce tobacco use, address hazardous and harmful use of alcohol, promote healthy diets and physical activity in primary health care and as public health interventions.

The learning material used in this course have been developed using evidence-based research that can be found in the resources page, which is packed full of reference materials, sources and links to extended reading for each module.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed primarily for primary health care providers, especially those in low- and middle-income countries but it is not restricted to this profession, and is suitable for other health professionals and students, including policymakers and primary health care service managers.

What will you learn?

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Improve knowledge and skills in implementing supportive health systems to undertake the integrated delivery of brief interventions in primary health care.
  2. Improve knowledge, skills and confidence to routinely identify patients with the NCD four behavioural risk factors and provide brief interventions to assist them in changing their behaviours.

Assessment and Award

Each module concludes with a final questionnaire to allow you to reflect on your learning and to consider how you might implement your new knowledge and skills in the workplace.

Learning experience

This program comprises 9 modules in total. The opening module is a general introduction to brief interventions and is followed by a pairing of theory and practice modules, focusing on the specifics of each risk factor.

  1. Brief interventions for NCD risk factors
  2. Tobacco use and tobacco dependence: the basics
  3. Quitting tobacco use: the 5As and 5Rs models
  4. Harmful use of alcohol: the basics
  5. Alcohol use and alcohol use disorders: screening, brief interventions, and treatment
  6. Healthy diets: the basics
  7. Promoting healthy diets: using the 5As brief intervention model
  8. Physical activity: the basics
  9. Promoting physical activity: using the 5As brief intervention model

Each module takes approximately 45-90 minutes to complete and comprises several lessons, which can be completed at your own pace. During these lessons, there are opportunities to watch animations, listen to narrations and engage in simple interactive activities to help maximize the impact of your learning in the workplace.
